Surfing in Uvita
Let try surfing some Costa Rican waves, shall we?
I had my first, let’s call it official, surf class about one month ago in Buzios, Brazil, and now that I carried some experience with me from my first surf sessions back there I was ready to try a new beach in a new country and go out there into the waves by myself.
I was lucky enough to meet the best surf company from Uvita, named Uvita360, who were taking a group of beginners to the beach La Colonia, also known as playa Chaman to the local Costa Riquenses. I know they are the best because it is run by two local surf dudes who dedicate their lives to surfing and stand-up peddle.
Matching your surfboard
With a couple of kids and some adults, all from the United States of America, we drove to the beach and entered the Ballena Marino National Park again. The surf instructors took all the boards from their car and lay the boards on the beach followed by a quick wax check. Everyone of us got an own board, since there were different sizes matching the height of a person. You can imagine that I got quite a long board π
Refresh my memory
We started the official surf class with a basic instruction on the beach. The instructor showed us how to lay on the surfboard, how to peddle and how to stand up. For me this felt as a refresh course, since I just got back from a previous course. It felt good to go through the steps again. We all had to show our ability to peddle and stand up on the board on the beach before we could enter the water with the boards.
All surfers!
The instructor kept on helping all the people with their first surfing experience making sure that they could all learn to stand up on their boards. I, in the meanwhile, peddled to the waves to practice the surfing on my own, but with the comfort of having the instructors nearby. I practiced a lot and had a lot of fun while seeing the others surfing as well. Cool! Everybody was surfing!
Then it was time for a little break. The instructor gave everyone an apple and a bottle of water and after about ten minutes we all headed back into the water still very enthusiastically! A couple more waves and then it’s lunch time.
What a great way to start the day. Pura vida.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
